Gallagher Bassett is dedicated to supporting the next generation in the insurance industry. One shining example of this commitment is Laura McGuire, who exemplifies the company's efforts to nurture and develop young talent. With a strong focus on mentorship and professional growth, Gallagher Bassett is paving the way for the future of the insurance sector. In this article Laura shares how Gallagher Bassett has supported her in her career journey to date.

I began my career at Gallagher Bassett in 2018 as a claims adjuster, eager to develop my skills in the insurance industry. Recognising Gallagher Bassett as the right step in the right direction, I actively searched for vacancies until a suitable role became available. After applying and successfully interviewing, I have been a part of the same team ever since.

Initially, I handled bent metal claims as a claims adjuster, but I soon expanded my expertise to include personal injury cases. My focus was on bus companies throughout the country, building a strong commercial client base. In 2022, I had the opportunity to handle casualty claims for public liability matters, broadening my understanding of different claim types. Although I later returned to handling commercial claims, this experience was invaluable. In July 2024, I was promoted to team leader, a significant step in my career progression.

As a team leader, I oversee the day-to-day operations of a team of six employees. I handle client queries, potential complaints, and liaise with the Head of Operations/Head of Commercial in Tamworth. As a team leader, I consider myself a mentor to new starters on my team, drawing from my own experiences of starting fresh at a new company.

Career progression is consistently encouraged at Gallagher Bassett and was one of the main reasons for wanting to join in 2018. In 2023, I was selected to participate in the emerging leadership program, an honour that provided me with valuable skills that I am now able to apply in my current role.

I am also currently working towards completing unit 2 of 4 for my CII Diploma. Gallagher Bassett has been incredibly supportive, offering study time during working hours, connecting me with colleagues who have completed the course, and providing additional study materials.

One of the highlights of my career thus far has been my promotion to team leader. It came at the perfect time for me, and although change can be challenging, I am thoroughly enjoying the role. Another memorable experience was participating in the Yorkshire Three Peaks charity event organised by Gallagher Bassett in April 2024. The challenge was tough, but the friendships formed along the way made it incredibly rewarding. Together, we raised over £37,000 for a great cause.

I chose to work at Gallagher Bassett because of the numerous opportunities for career progression I feel this is what makes Gallagher Bassett different. We are always encouraged to progress, whether that be for qualifications or for career moves. Whether I decide to pursue a legal route with Strata Solicitors or transition into client services, there are various divisions to explore based on my desired career path. Gallagher Bassett's encouragement of progress, whether through qualifications or career moves, sets them apart. In my role, effective communication and cost-saving outcomes are crucial to our clients. I take pride in sharing good news stories, whether we save the client £50 or £10,000.

Looking ahead, my top three goals are to complete my CII Diploma, further develop my experience as a team leader, and ultimately aspire to be part of the executive board. While insurance wasn't a career I envisioned during my school years, I found my passion for it after working as an admin assistant and later being promoted to a claims handler.

Outside of work, I am heavily involved in the motorsport industry, Most weekends I am at a race track all over the country, whether that be at Kings Lynn, Northampton or Skegness to name a few. My dad has always been in the industry - racing banger cars, F2 stock cars and F1 stock cars since I was born. For my 12th birthday, my dad built me a banger car and I started racing from then on. My fiancé also races banger cars so when im not racing myself im helping to fix his and being on hand to pass him any tools he needs. I absolutely love my racing and whilst it can be very expensive, its worth every penny!
