We are delighted to announce that the Gallagher Bassett Risk Consulting team in partnership with our client DHL have been nominated at the CIR Risk Management Awards in the Best Use of Technology category.

The nomination focuses on our Site in a Box initiative where by Gallagher Bassett works with DHL to enhance their ability to robustly defend themselves against the risk of existing and future claims when a DHL operating site is being closed. The process also allows for claims to be paid efficiently where liability attaches, thus controlling the associated costs. We achieve this by undertaking a Site in a Box (SIAB) review of the site.

By leveraging the expertise maintained by Gallagher Bassett in the realms of risk management and claims management, allied with good standards of health and safety management within the respective DHL sites, a fundamental analysis of the risk of future claims exposure is completed, which includes the accumulation of reliable evidence to substantiate any defence at a future date.

The SIAB process covers all classes of claim. In summary, it is a combination of desktop assessment, an on-site physical inspection of a site scheduled for closure (including the acquisition of photographic and video evidence), and interviews with key site management in order to capture and preserve information pertaining to:

  • The general condition and state of repair of the workplace environment and work equipment with emphasis on those areas and items presenting common health and safety hazards.
  • The availability and adequacy of documentation relating to routine inspections, servicing and maintenance of the workplace and key items of workplace equipment.
  • The availability and adequacy of documentation relating specifically to incidents, accidents and complaints.
  • The prevailing safety management system and safety culture.

The SIAB process provides DHL with confidence that they have a defence pack ready in the event of existing or future claims. The information gathered and report also identify any areas of inherent weakness in process and procedures that may be used to develop and implement risk improvements at other DHL sites. This collaborative working partnership on SIAB has to date seen DHL attributed savings in claims costs to the value of £426,000.

Commenting on the nomination, Gallagher Bassett Risk Consulting Director, Ashley Easen “For me this epitomises Risk Management in action. Our partnership with DHL has enabled us to move quickly when sites are set for closure in order to complete the site in a box process and capture the view of the site and all the information we need to manage future claims that may arise. This process has enabled the successful defence of claims which may otherwise have needed to be settled due to a lack of evidence and documentation to defend. The savings this has generated are sizable and helps to internally promote the value of the service.”

“The GB “Site in a Box” product has been an extremely effective risk management tool that has helped increase DHL’s claims defensibility for claims received for our closed sites, mitigating our claims spend by over £425,000. The process has also helped settle fair and correct claims in a prompt manner which would usually be difficult with the passing of time. Working with our Insurance Risk Management team, GB ensured that a clear and defined structure was in place, this was also suitably adapted during the pandemic which allowed for consistency within our UK Supply Chain business.” Noted DHL.

The Site in a Box initiative is another example of the innovative solutions that Gallagher Bassett provides to support our clients in mitigating risks they are faced with.

“The SIAB process is a great example of the innovative work we are able to do in collaboration with our partners at DHL, this process allows us to support DHL in mitigating any risks they may face during the claims lifecycle throughout a site closure. The results speak for themselves and demonstrate how through our expertise and innovative solutions we can help support clients to achieve better outcomes. We look forward to continuing to support DHL throughout this journey.” Noted Chief Client Officer, John Fearn.
